how is a 9-3 VPI team ahead of a 10-2 Georgia Tech team that beat VPI?

poll fail

Because VT played a tougher schedule and they didn't require outrageous fortune to get to ten wins.

I wonder if you were one of the Anons who criticized my post arguing that there wasn't a big gap between Georgia and Georgia Tech. How did that work out?

Why does Stanford jump so high in your poll after beating a 6-5 team and the team they lost to the week before at home falls two positions. That's right, you will probably cite to ypp to rationalize in your mind that Stanford actually beat Cal, who needs final scores.

Whom should I place ahead of Stanford? It's hard as hell to pick a #10 this week.

You could go with 10-2 GT over 8-4 Stanford.

Hmm, one team with an excellent offense and mediocre defense over another? Honestly, I bumped Stanford up because I see them as the West Coast version of Georgia Tech.

PS - Paul Johnson gets the Sir Alex Ferguson full of shit award for the "Georgia hasn't won anything since 1980" comment.

Haha, yeah I suppose he does, but PJ is a talker, always has been. I think he is just playing the part and he's probably upset with the results. While the rivalry game clearly means a lot to the fans, myself included, I completely understand his main point and that is right now GT has more to play for, more work to do, and the uga loss means absolutely nothing this year. GT wasn't in a position to play for the championship game so losing that game didn't keep them from that. It was a non-conference game and GT is still playing for a BSC bowl, so there is no point in getting worked up over that one game.

Unfortunately VPI is ahead of GT in almost every metric outside of head-to-head and oypp, so if we are ranking based on the entire body of work then it's very hard to argue GT over VPI. As for Stanford, you are right in that they are the west coast version of GT, but if it's a toss-up based on ypp, then why not reward the better record? Close wins or not, GT still won two more games than Stanford.

Really though, debating one spot is hardly worth it unless there is a clear and large discrepency between two teams.

Michael, does the fact that the game was played on the field mean nothing to you?

you'd fit right in with the AP and coaches' poll voters.

Anon, Miami and Georgia Tech also played on the field.

So long as you don't use that as your reasoning that the gap between GT and uga is small Michael, haha.

And Anon, that is exactly why head-to-head results is easily one of the worst metrics to compare teams. It's relative, but not definitive and it leads to very bad circular logic. If all things are equal, then sure head-to-head results should be used, but like I mentioned above, the difference between VPI and GT outside of the a couple of stats and the head-to-head result show that VPI is the better team overall.

Personally, I'd leave the top seven, but then go VPI, GT, Stanford, OSU (or maybe OSU then Standford, but really at this point it means nothing). Losing to Miami is one thing as they've shown that they are a solid team, but after losing to uga, there really isn't much left to help defend GT. I love my Jackets, but the defense is miserable, the kicking game is horrendous, and there's really not much that I can say to defend that.
